An Analysis of Style

Shirt: Madewell (different color)  Belt: old Coach  Shorts: Levi's (similar)  Sunglasses: Ray-Ban  Jewelry: UO and DogEared  Shoes: Coach

Hey - haven't seen you guys for a while.  I'm sorry for my brief departure, but I'm back~

I notice that blogs seem to grab "inspiration" from one another - especially when it comes to styling. Recently I've been seeing a lot of the half tuck and the top knot.

Hand in hair, top knot in place, flamingo pose, admiring the ground - my most original picture to date.
Before reading any further, please remember that these are my opinions and I am not saying they are better than yours nor correct.

To start with the positive - I really do like the top knot.  I'm not exactly good at it, but they're flattering.  Looks great with collared shirts.

Now, onto the bad - the half tuck.  Based on my "research", I believe that J. Crew started doing this, then popular fashion bloggers, then regular bloggers.  I really don't understand what is appealing about this look.  I think fully tucked in shirts look much better than leaving a flap out or just tucking in the middle.

Maybe the half tuck is only popular because J.Crew (and Madewell, much to my chagrin) is doing it and bloggers want to attract them as sponsors? Or maybe people actually do like the half tuck.

I would love to talk about this in the comments!  If you do like it, tell me so.  Thought provoking discussion can be had even when it comes to fashion.
Gotta love the reflection of my boyfriend.
So, what do you think of the new styles you're seeing lately?

P.S. - This is only a taste of some new, more opinionated and "discussion promoting" content that I plan on bringing to my corner of the Internet.  Stay tuned!

  1. easy and cheerful casual style!

do you want to follow each other (on bloglovin' and gfc)? let me know.
    see you around!

  2. i kinda love it! It is a combo of polished and relaxed...its hard to get used to but its something fun and different and you don't have to stress over your shirt coming untucked a lil when you move your arms ;)

    you totally rocked this look!

    1. I suppose that would be the case for shirts that are a bit shorter in length...I just use a belt to keep my ends secured. :)

      And thank you!

  3. Baha, I wish J Crew or Madewell would sponsor me! I like the half tuck, gives you a chance to display a belt or jean detailing...but I can't rock the top knot personally with my giant forehead :P You look great though...very blogger trendy and so polished but breezy :)

  4. Ok, so I kind of agree with you and kind of not. :) I don't like the half tuck where the tuck splits at the buttons - like half of the front of your shirt is tucked in and half not. I think it just looks sloppy. However - I am a HUGE fan of the front tuck. But I have a reason for that.

I am a rather large-chested lady, which means that button downs that fit me in the chest are usually ginormous in the waist (my chest needs a size 10-14 top while my waist is a size 6). By tucking in the front half, I don't look like I'm drowning in my husband's shirt. Also, if I were to tuck in the whole thing, there would be so much material that it would bunch up under the waistline of my pants and not look very attractive. That means that half tuck works perfectly for me - I only have to tuck a little bit in and my waist immediately gets more definition than it would if I just left my shirt untucked!!

    1. I suppose the half tuck can be done well when people are not blindly following J.Crew, which happens to be the case in a lot of "popular" blogs. I swear that's not supposed to sound condescending haha. Anyways,if a style flatters your body, then why wouldn't you support said style? Your point is extremely valid and makes sense! I checked out some style photos of yours and the half tuck does flatter your body and doesn't look ridiculous because it is done subtly.

  5. AMEN sista! I totally agree with you - love the top knot and I think the half tuck just looks undone :) I love this plaid shirt!!!

  6. Cute outfit! That shirt is so summer perfect!

  7. hahaahaha i love your outfit!
    you look gorgeous :))
thanks for the funny comment hehe

  8. Similarly to you, I am not a huge fan of the half/side tuck. I prefer to just tuck it in the front and leave the back out or all the way. The front w/the side is just not really my thing....

  9. I actually love the half tuck! Not so much with an oxford, but tucking in the front of my shirt or something makes the belt more visible and gives a baggier top shape without being so obvious. I love the topknot though! But for some reason my hair is too thick or something- I cannot pull it off!

    1. My hair is really thick too - there are probably 30 pins in my bun hah. So much for it being effortless...

  10. Love Ray-Bans! :) Thanks for following - I'll be happy to follow back. xo

  11. Nice post Ally, I love bloggers who just say it like it is. I've noticed a lot of bloggers wearing the same thing. Post after post, everyone is wearing the same outfit! However, I can't say I'm not guilty of this too. Ha!

Just IMO - I love the half tuck but I hate topknots. I don't think they're flattering! But maybe it's just hair envy because my hair's too short to pull that off. But I like the half tuck, I think a full tuck is just too stuffy for my taste. Just my 2 cents!

Also - glad to see you back!

    1. I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's the beauty of fashion blogging - people can show off their style and who they are. I can appreciate half tucks in moderation, but I see so many people doing it in every post that it just gets boring, stereotypical, etc. This applies to J. Crew as well. And I like the top knot but prefer my hair down. (:

      And thank you!

  12. love the shirt! :)

  13. thank you so much for your comment! If you like the blog follow please, i would be very happy, and follow back!

  15. The half tuck is definitely a phenomenon. I first noticed it on a denim blog. Tried it myself but it looks silly on me. Cute on you though.

  16. I love the colors in that top! And I agree with you...don't understand the half tuck! haha... Thanks for stopping by my blog! Following you now too :-)

  17. you have a fun style! love that green checkered shirt!

following you on GFC! mind checking out my blog and follow me back? thanks!

  18. Although I personally hate the idea that people follow trends just because someone (or company) deemed them "in", isn't that what the whole game of styling and trends is about? It reminds me of the speech that Miranda Priestly gave Andy in The Devil Wears Prada about Andy's blue sweater (how trends filter down the fashion chain and eventually end up on the Old Navy sales rack).
About the two trends at hand, I dig top knots all the time--although for me they are NEVER "effortless". As for the half-tuck, I believe the front half-tuck is another viable way to style a shirt. (I don't think I'd ever wear a shirt like your third pic, but never say never!) Some shirts need the full tuck while others only need the 1/2--especially if you're going for the "effortless" look :)
Love your blog and this post! Can't wait for more discussion posts like this!

  19. totally a fan of the tucked in look, i do it a lot with my button downs and denim shirts. great look! x

  20. You wear this look very well. Inspiration does travel in interesting patterns. The first time I remember seeing a half tuck was in a Balenciaga show, perhaps Fall 2010? Unfortunately I can't remember exactly when, but I wonder if they had to do with the start of the fad.

  21. I have hip long hair and have to admit I've been sporting a top knot before it was ever considered cool. It's the best thing that's ever happened to me, and one of the easiest - comes with time. I agree on the half tucked shirt, the whole idea of not looking proper in proper clothes just seems a bit too artificial to me. We should be happy we can look nice :)
On another note, I absolutely adore the colour shade of your shirt, and it really flatters your complexion and hair colour. Lovely. I'd like to follow your blog and once I figure out how to convert wordpress to blogger follows you'll be on my daily reads!

    1. I'm glad we have a similar opinion! I went into a J.Crew the other day and there were half tucks EVERYWHERE. I was both sad and offended haha.

I'm glad you enjoy my blog so far! I'm planning on writing more articles which I'll hope you like. :)
